Stop Looking For One-Size-Fits-All Marketing Employees

Businesses constantly post ads online for in-house employees who can handle various areas of marketing. You want someone who can manage your website and social media, handle SEO and copywriting and do several other things that your brand needs to generate sales. Understandable, you cannot afford to hire four or five people to accommodate these needs so you are trying to find someone who can handle as many of them as possible. Sometimes, you do get lucky and find someone who can handle some of the tasks you need, but it puts more pressure on them to accomplish and manage each job throughout the day.

Often times, these people begin to struggle over the next few months and burn out quickly. Why? Because they literally are doing four jobs in one and they cannot move forward and help you grow. So, what’s the solution? You can still hire someone in-house and the smart thing to do is focus on what aspects will be most time-consuming or that you need immediate response on. For example, someone who is great at managing a WordPress site and also knows social media with some basic graphic design capabilities and can manage your email list can be a great fit. Then, outsource things like SEO, copywriting, Google AdWords management and link building to a firm that knows how to do it and excels at it.

Your new in-house marketing director can oversee the efforts of the marketing agency and ensure that they are doing their job and that you are getting reasonable work for the money you are spending. This concept is something that a lot of smaller businesses have had to adopt as they begin to understand that there are too many areas of digital marketing to cover by a single person. Yes, it’s good to have someone in-house to assist you but you still need to make sure that you are getting the quality you require to succeed.

Identify the top five to ten areas of marketing and management you need to focus on. Then, break the list down based on what you would want or need taken care of by an in-house person and what can be send to a marketing agency. Once you’ve put together that type of a list you have a better idea of what to look for in a new hire and you can build your marketing up the right way with a strong team.
